Sardines are the new trending superfood, for good reason. They’re a nutritional powerhouse packed with protein, omega-3s, vitamin D, calcium, iron, selenium, and vitamin B12, supporting hormones, energy, brain health, and inflammation.

Many are hesitant to try sardines because of their fishy flair, but with the right combination of flavors, they’re surprisingly delicious.

Ingredients

  • sardines, 1 can (Wild Planet boneless & skinless in olive oil)
  • garlic cloves, 1 large or 2 small, diced small
  • italian breadcrumbs, 1/4 cup
  • nutritional yeast, 1/4 cup
  • tomato paste, 1 tbsp
  • salt + pepper, to taste
  • olive oil, for cooking
  • optional: parmesan, to taste

Choose A Base

  • pasta or gnocchi w/ sauce of choice, 2–3 cups cooked
  • roasted potatoes, 2 cups
  • roasted or sautéed vegetables, 2–3 cups
  • toast, 2 slices
  • greens or salad, 2–3 cups

Directions

  1. Heat a generous drizzle of olive oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes.

  2. Drain sardines from can and add to a bowl with breadcrumbs, nutritional yeast, tomato paste, salt, and pepper. Mash together until combined. Stir in parmesan if using.

  3. Add mixture to the pan with garlic. Cook for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until toasted and lightly crisp.

  4. Spoon over pasta, gnocchi, roasted vegetables, bowls or even toast for a savory protein boost.
